After reading an essay called Writing Is A Social and Rhetorical Activity by Kevin Roozen within our text, Naming What We Know: Threshold Concepts of Writing Studies by Linda Adler-Kassner and Elizabeth Wardle I was reminded of what a social activity writing actually is. Roozen reminds us that many times when we explain what writing project we are working one we give shorthand explanations which in a way condenses the actual activity of writing into the sole act of a writer creating a text.

He follows this by pointing out the contrary when he says, “writers are engaged in the work of making meaning for particular audiences and purpose, and writers are always connected to other people” (17). In this essay he articulates that, “Writing puts the writer in contact with other people, but the social nature of writing goes beyond the people writers draw upon and think about” (18) we must take into consideration the sources from which we get our information, as they were written by another person as well. He mentions that, “Writing encompasses the countless people who have shaped the genres, tools, artifacts, technologies, and places writers act with as they address the needs of their audiences (18). When writing, it’s easy to fall into the bad habit of seeing our writing as an individual work that stands on it’s own.
